Winter Externship: Ernst & Young

Eller PDC Student Stories

EY Entrance Los AngelesBy Joseph Paul Tocco

Hello Eller colleagues!  I am a first semester Accounting student and am honored to have participated in one of Eller’s Winter Externships.  I was lucky enough to have received a one day, all inclusive, fantastic externship at Ernst & Young, Los Angeles.  Joining one of the Big 4 has always been a dream of mine, and this was an opportunity to get my foot in the door.  The day started at Starbucks, directly in front of the enormous skyscraping EY building.  Once introduced to my host and with coffee in hand, we proceeded up to a city view office where we discussed a current project from inception to the current status.  By the way, it was a 9 million dollar contract.  The day went so smooth that we lost track of time, but that didn’t seem to bother this extremely busy person.  After leaving the office about five hours later, I was treated to a very nice lunch, a very unique experience that does not come very often.  You might be asking yourself, what is the benefit for going all the way to Los Angeles to meet someone for one day?  Let me tell you.  This was networking at its finest.  The people I met were Eller Alumni, and they all understand how much effort it takes to land a job with a company like EY.  Don’t be afraid, they truly want to see students succeed.  I am in constant communication with my host and have even been put in contact with recruiters across the southwest.  For you pre-business students, there is no better time to start building connections than right now.  Shout out to the Professional Development Department, PDC, for all your hard work and valuable connections.
