Nathan Schupp and Sam Kinkade won the 2015 Edward Jones Portfolio Challenge. You can compete in 2016! The kick-off is Friday, Feb. 5.
By: Nathan Schupp
I first heard of the Edward Jones Portfolio Challenge in one of my finance classes sophomore year. At the time, myself and 3 other finance majors decided to compete in the competition and ultimately got second. Last year, I decided that I would like to compete once again in hopes of winning. On the second attempt, it was just myself and Sam Kinkade, which was uncommon given that you could have up to four people on you team.
The competition consisted of being given a set of mock clients who were looking to prepare for retirement by reorganizing their portfolio. From there, the competition breaks into 3 parts. First, there is an executive summary where you describe your strategy and how you plan to help accomplish the goals of the client. The field was then narrowed to 10 teams who then selected their securities and the justification for each choice. Five teams were chosen based off those reports to give a final presentation to professionals from Edward Jones including the head of trading from their Phoenix HQ. For this presentation, we were to explain our security selections and were then invited to network with approximately 10 Edward Jones employees. Ultimately, it was our emphasis on the client’s needs and desires that won us the competition.
