Over Winter Break more than 100 Eller students participated in Externships in the form of one-day job shadows.
Gracy Slaughter (Pre-Business) shadowed Lindsey J. Arrey, a Director of Marketing at Fellowship Square in Phoenix, AZ.
Why did you want to do this externship?
I did this externship to learn more about what an actual day of work looks like for someone in a marketing career. I don’t know enough about what career path I want to choose, so I figured shadowing someone to see what they do on a daily basis would help me decide.
What did you do during this job shadow experience?
Lindsey walked me through her typical day and responsibilities. We got to tour the whole facility, and everywhere we went, she showed me places she had personally worked on to improve or places she was in the process of upgrading. Plus, I got to see her ideas and the work that goes into building an entirely new facility in Surprise, AZ. I learned about all of the marketing tactics Lindsey went through to have a successful launch of the new facility in 2017.
What did you learn as a result of the externship?
One takeaway I learned from Lindsey was the importance of networking. She got her job because of networking and explained a lot of her jobs came through networking alone. Another interesting thing I thought she did was keep a journal of her year. Everyday she would write down important conversations, observations, statistics, or highlights of her day. Moving forward in whatever career I choose, I think I would like to keep a journal for progress as well! Marketing is fast-paced and very creative which is a path I am looking forward to continuing.
