My name is Sam Steadman and I am originally from the Bay Area. I am currently finishing up my last semester as a Marketing student at the Eller College of Management and could not be more excited for what the future holds. Eller gave me a once in a lifetime professional experience, when I was a sophomore, by selecting me to participate in an externship with Nike. Right after that externship, I thought that Nike was my end goal, but little did I know that I would find the world of advertising to be my true niche in life. I will now be living the “Mad Men” lifestyle post graduation, and I am thrilled!
What is the position you have accepted?
A week after graduation, I will be heading to Dallas, TX to accept a position with The Richards Group. The Richards Group is the largest independently owned advertising agency in the U.S. My position will be a digital/social strategist, and my accounts are 7UP and Dr. Pepper. Being on the digital side of advertising is very exciting because it is still very up and coming within the ad world.
How did you land this opportunity?
Last summer, I was an intern for The Richards Group in the same position that I will be working for them now. Prior to receiving the internship, I had networked with one of the “groupers” at The Richards Group who helped me get an interview. This was crucial because it is very difficult to break into the ad world with no connections, but not impossible!! Using LinkedIn is a very valuable tool to try to match with people in the industry and seek opportunities/ advice. Never turn down an internship in the advertising realm because that is a huge compliment. Once you receive an internship, prove yourself, and you will rewarded.
