Alumni Spotlight– Michael De Garmo, Yelp

Eller PDC Coordinator Alumni Stories

Michael De Garmo studied Business Administration and is now working at Yelp in Phoenix, AZ.

Why did you choose to work for Yelp? I chose Yelp for a couple major reasons. Graduating college I knew that a career in sales was what I wanted to pursue so Yelp was an awesome fit for that! The company culture, the location and easy transition from U of A, the competitive compensation package, the attractiveness of the industry, and the growth opportunity within the organization were what ultimately helped me make the decision.

Tell us about your job responsibilities and title. Starting off at Yelp, my job responsibility was to drive a full sales cycle from prospecting to closing the deal within the local business sector. I recently got promoted to the franchise organization within Yelp where I now work with franchise businesses with similar responsibilities but a more diverse sales strategy. I am now responsible for leading large campaigns across different verticals working with big name brands like Farmers insurance, Coldwell Banker and Meineke Car Care Center.

What do you enjoy most about working at Yelp? Working at Yelp has been an incredible experience and there are a lot of different aspects I enjoy. I would have to say the number one aspect has been working with people who are extremely eager to help advance your career and do it with open arms. It’s a good feeling to know that you can approach any one and they are willing to help you.

What is your fondest Eller memory? My fondest memory at Eller was hosting information sessions for big time companies through the EBAB club (Eller business administration board) through my cohort. It gave me the opportunity to interact with fortune 500 companies and connect students to learn more about career opportunities.

What advice do you have for Eller students seeking a similar career path? Network as much as possible! Not only will it enable you to get an understanding of the business world and the opportunities out there but it will also help pin point what interests you. The career fair is a huge resource that people miss out on and it was what enabled me to get my job at Yelp right out of college. There are a ton of networking opportunities within the different clubs as well as faculty members that you can talk to at Eller, so get involved!
