Emily Jordan is a Marketing major graduating in May. She interned at Aerotek in San Ramon, CA this summer.
Tell us a little bit about how you landed the internship: I landed this internship through a family friend. My friend had the internship last summer and he really learned a lot about the sales industry. I wanted to try it out, so I got in contact with his friend and the friend set me up with Aerotek’s internal recruiter. From there, I had to go through a phone screen and a face to face interview. They offered it to me in April.
What was a typical day at your internship like? At Aerotek, there is no such thing as a typical day. Every day is different. You are cold calling, prospecting clients, speaking with customers, and meeting up with people every day in and out of the office. I was able to go on a few meetings and lunches with account managers and recruiters. It was very interesting seeing the different client work sites and meeting new people daily.
What was your favorite part of the internship? My favorite part about the internship was that I was actually able to do the job of the recruiter. I was trained for 2 weeks and then I was able to get on the phones and start recruiting. I was able to fill a position in every division the office had. Each type of division has a specific recruiting style, and I was able to learn and recruit on all of them.
What advice you have for other students looking for a similar internship? I would tell students to be persistent in their search for a sales internship. Recruiters are looking to see if you follow up and how much you really want the position. I connected with the internal recruiter through email about 5 times before she gave me a phone screen. You have to show them you really want it.
