Tyler Williams is majoring in MIS and interned at State Farm in Bloomington, IL.
Tell us a little bit about how you landed the internship? I went to the MIS career immersion that Eller put on in my first semester in the college and I was able to talk to recruiters from the company there. I ran into them again at the school-wide career fair and because of my previous interaction with them, they knew who I was, and I was offered an interview that same day.
What was your favorite part of the internship? My favorite part of the internship was winning the intern speech competition. Interns from across all of the hub locations spoke in the semi-finals, and for the finals I had the opportunity to give a speech in front of the company’s CIO. Winning that was a lot of fun.
What advice you have for other students looking for a similar internship? My biggest piece of advice for other interns looking for a similar internship would be to take advantage of everything that Eller does for you. Whether that be mock interviews, resume workshops, or career fairs, go to them and try to learn something from them even if they don’t work out in your favor.
How has Eller prepared you for your internship? Eller prepared me for my internship in a number of ways. At my internship, we had a lot of work in a team setting. Eller stresses the importance of working in a team (case comp, group projects, etc) and because of this I was prepared. The biggest way Eller prepared me was by teaching me how to communicate in a business setting, both written and verbally. All the work that I had done in BCOM was put into practice and I feel that it was a large reason for my success this summer.
