Amber Simons-O’Neill is graduating in May 2017 with a major in Business Management and Entrepreneurship. Over the winter break, she had an externship with Ford and Lincoln Motor Company in Phoenix, AZ.
Why did you want to do this externship? The auto industry has undergone numerous changes thanks to technology and population increase in the United States within the past 50 years. As a management major, I think it is incredibly important to be able to adapt to the industry, acknowledge changes and progress in a beneficial way for the company and the employees. As Ford and Lincoln Motor Company is one of the top automotive makers and distributors in the United States I knew there was an immense amount of knowledge to gain.
What did you do during this job shadow experience? Kristina, a distributor representative for Ford and Lincoln Motor Company, was kind enough to meet with me over a three hour lunch to discuss the opportunities and responsibilities of her job.
What did you learn as a result of the externship? I am not sure there is an easy way to sum up the immense amount of information I learned during my lunch. I learned about the pros and cons of making her own schedule, maintaining relationships with clients, utilizing the resources available to her, opportunities within the company, and how her education at Eller prepared her for her current job and career aspirations. Her insight professionally and personally was invaluable and I have already begun to implement her recommendations and advice into my own life! I am so grateful to have had this externship opportunity.
