Beatriz Ortez is graduating in December 2018 with a major in Accounting. Over the winter break, she had an externhip at Regier Carr & Monroe in Tucson, AZ.
Why did you want to do this externship? My purpose for participating in this externship was to aid me in deciding whether I would like to stay in my Tucson community for my future career or to branch out to a new city.
What did you do during this job shadow experience? My externship was at Regier Carr & Monroe Public Accounting Firm here in Tucson. The day was spent listening and networking with the tax, audit, fraud and forensic accountants at the firm. We also had the opportunity to ask them numerous questions and they were excellent at being extremely knowledgeable in their field. In addition, we were provided with lunch and a goody bag. All in all, the day was amazing!!
What did you learn as a result of the externship? There seems to be a strong encouragement to work for one of the Big Four accounting firms as an accounting major; however, after my externship, I learned that it is totally okay to feel like you belong at a local firm. During my externship, I began to evaluate my values and the major components I seek for in my future work place, and I came to the conclusion that I would indeed enjoy staying local and having a balance between work, my family, and volunteer opportunities.
