Jake Reed is graduating in May 2018 with a major in Business Economics. Over the winter break, he had an externship at BDO in Los Angeles, CA.
Why did you want to do this externship? I talked to Jeff Welter about consulting internships for this summer earlier this semester. He told me about BDO and gave me a contact of a U of A alumni that had worked there for a couple of years. I talked to the BDO employee and was very intrigued by what he had to say about his job and the company. Then later in the semester I heard about the externship with BDO and knew that I wanted an inside-look at the firm.
What did you do during this job shadow experience? I sat down with a recent Eller Alumnus and he walked me through the day-to-day activities of his job. Then I got lunch with his group and was able to meet other people from the firm. After lunch I was able to talk to managers and the director of the office.
What did you learn as a result of the externship? I learned how the consulting division of BDO worked closely with their accounting division and solved real problems. This externship also showed me how valuable my finance classes are because many of the things I learned last semester transferred almost exactly to what BDO Consulting does everyday.
