Externship Spotlight- Jaya Thanikachalam, Geico

Eller PDC Coordinator Student Stories

Jaya Thanikachalam is graduating in Spring 2020 and she is currently a pre-business student. Over the winter break, she had an externship with Geico in Tucson, AZ.

Why did you want to do this externship? As a freshman, I was eager to learn more about business in a real-life setting, beyond the material presented in textbooks. I was specifically interested in Geico because it’s the fastest growing insurance company and there is a huge branch in Tucson!

What did you do during this job shadow experience? I was allowed to listen in on calls in customer service, sales, and claims. Each department dealt with very different situations so this externship gave me exposure to the different aspects to an insurance company.

What did you learn as a result of the externship? I received first-hand experience with learning the operations of an insurance company and seeing the positive job atmosphere at Geico. After shadowing some of the employees, I learned how to handle complicated situations in each department- whether it was satisfying a wide variety of customers or assessing which party is at fault in a car accident; it was very eye-opening to see all the work done right in front of me. Furthermore, I learned how teamwork and communication skills come to play in a corporate setting to get tasks completed and make sure the company runs smoothly. Overall, it was an amazing experience and I am looking forward to interning/working with Geico in the future!
