Tamara Estrella is graduating in May 2017 with a major in Marketing. Over the winter break, she had an externship with Marriott International in San Diego, CA.
Why did you want to do this externship? I have always been very interested in global business and the Hospitality sector is an industry that excels in this area. As a marketing student I also wanted to have a real-world sales experience from a relevant company, and Marriott International is currently the leading hotel chain in the world.
What did you do during this job shadow experience? I shadowed a Sales Executive, Mat Anderson.
What did you learn as a result of the externship? I was able to learn how Sales Executives uncover new group businesses and business transients, and how they start and develop a relationship with clients to acquire multi-term contracts. I really enjoyed how Mat, my mentor, tried to genuinely help his clients and how they trusted him and remained to him loyal throughout the years. I had the opportunity to travel to Irvine, CA., and visit the South West Sales Offices where I learned more about the logistics and internal operations and how all hotels, instead of competing, help each other throughout territories.
