Austin Hempy graduated in May 2016 with a major in Finance and a minor in Global Business. He now works at Vanguard as a personal investor brokerage in Scottsdale, AZ.
Why did you choose to work for Vanguard? I chose to work at Vanguard because of the diverse company culture and the many opportunities available to me for professional growth within the company. Working here also gives me the opportunity to help investors plan for retirement, from young adults saving for the first time to older individuals looking for investment guidance.
Tell us about your job responsibilities and title. Job title: Personal Investor Brokerage Investment Professional. I was required to pass the Series 7 and 63 licensing exams in order to work in this position. My responsibilities at work include assisting and educating investors regarding their retirement portfolios. I trade Vanguard mutual funds and help clients understand our long term investment philosophy.
What do you enjoy most about working at Vanguard? Our company is well known and respected in the industry, and all of our employees work together as a team to maintain that perspective. The inclusion of all employees in everyday activities in a team environment makes coming to work enjoyable.
What is your fondest Eller memory? I participated in the Eller Global Business program, and my best memory at Eller was studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We traveled with 40 other Eller students and spent two months in Argentina, completing our first 15 upper level units there.
What advice do you have for Eller students seeking a similar career path? Be client service oriented if you are seeking a job here at Vanguard. Always be professional, organized, and maintain the relationships you build throughout your career. Be prepared to study a few months after you graduate in order to pass the Series 7 and 63 exams.
