Ashnah is graduating in May 2018 with a major in marketing. Over the winter break, she had an externship with JLL in Phoenix, AZ.
Why did you want to do this Externship? I have a great interest in branding and promotion, as well as advertising aspects for a company. Many companies use outside advertising agencies to handle their marketing, but JLL uses an in-house marketing department. I thought it would be very interesting to see how an in-house marketing department functions and what benefits they have from being in-house.
What did you do during this job shadow experience? I was very grateful to have this experience and shadow the Director of Marketing in Phoenix, Liz Tanori. She showed me the day-to-day functions of the company and what she does to keep JLL successful and relatable to their target market. I was able to meet many the employees that work in different teams and how each team is essential to the goals of the company and how their work integrates to the marketing department.
What did you learn as a result of your Externship? Going to the Jones Lang LaSalle location in Phoenix was a very educational and informative experience. I was able to see the local and state tactics JLL uses to showcase and promote their brand with an in-house marketing department rather than using an outside agency. JLL is part of a global brand that’s in over 80 different countries and is a Fortune 500 company. It was very interesting to learn how the Phoenix office uses direction from global initiatives and then use those ideas to shape how they will advertise and market themselves to a variety of customers locally and within Arizona.
