Zachary Berenson is a Finance major who will graduate in 2018. This summer, he interned with Vanguard in Scottsdale as their College of Corporate. This company offered interns a housing relocation stipend to those students who needed it.
How did you land this internship? I landed this internship at the Eller Expo in Fall of 2016.
What was your favorite part of the experience? My favorite part of the experience was the unconditional support we would receive from the employees. I couldn’t tell you how many random employees would come by my desk to introduce themselves and offer their help. It made us all feel valued and welcomed.
If you worked on a big project, please describe it. My department has a team in Pennsylvania and Arizona. Currently, the two teams come in at the relative same time (9 am PA – 6 am AZ). My major project for the summer was to analyze the current state and provide a recommendation on if it’s best to optimize AZ’s hours by moving them back to starting at 9 am AZ time. It required extensive knowledge on the technical aspects of my team’s jobs as well as the human aspect of how they would react to the shift. I recommended the department move AZ team’s hours back.
What advice do you have for other students seeking a similar internship? Find something you are passionate about and pursue it. It’s not all about leadership, it’s about differentiating yourself from others. The best advice I can offer is to pursue what you are passionate about and you can prove leadership and work ethic through that. It doesn’t need to be in multiple positions or President of every club.
