Caroline Boncoskey is a Marketing and Entrepreneurship major graduating in May 2018. This summer, she interned at Macy’s as their Store Management associate in Chicago, Ill. This internship did not provide housing for interns.
How did you land this internship? I met a recruiter for Macy’s, who is also an alumni of the business fraternity I am in on campus, at the Eller Expo last Fall. After talking to her for awhile at the Expo I was called for a phone interview and then an in person interview on campus.
What was a typical day like? This summer I quickly learned there is no “typical day” in retail, especially at a flagship location. Everyday was different which gave me a great opportunity to grow as a leader and get a better understanding of retail as an industry. Despite the constant changes, an everyday task included analyzing store reports and sales trends to analyze for future business needs in the cosmetic department.
If you worked on a big project, please describe it. At the end of the summer, I presented my internship capstone in front of a large crowd of store and district managers from the North Central region. For my project I focused on increasing sales in the cosmetic department by focusing on customer responses and satisfaction ratings otherwise known as “Magic”. For my project I tracked sales trends and customers responses and coached my associates based on feedback in order to increase the overall Magic score. By the end of the internship sales and the magic score increased, which I was able to highlight in my project presentation.
