Internship Spotlight – Ashnah Strongheart, PepsiCo

Eller PDC Coordinator Student Stories

Ashnah Strongheart is a Marketing major graduating in May 2018. This summer, she had an internship with PepsiCo where she worked in their Marketing and Sales department for Frito-Lay. The interns receive a housing stipend to cover living situations.

How did you land this internship? I started by talking with a recruiter at Eller through the round table meet & greet and then by talking with recruiters at the Eller fall career fair called Eller Expo! I was then able to get an initial first interview and after receiving my resume, cover letter, and other information I was offered my internship within 1 month of interviewing.

Every day was different working for PepsiCo. They have a multitude of brands and each and every part of the company requires hard work. My days usually started with an initial visit from my manager and writing a “gameplan” for the day and the rest of the week. Then, I would spend much of my time understanding the market for my location and how I could make an impact for PepsiCo in those areas. Some days included tours of how Pepsi and Frito-Lay products are made as well as on-site visits with other interns to reflect and brainstorm on our summer projects and progress thus far.

What was your favorite part of the experience? Meeting extraordinary people throughout the entire company! Everyone is extremely passionate about their job and always willing to go the extra mile. Whenever I needed help or advice about something whether it be my summer project or life in general, there was someone there to help.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship? Don’t be afraid of going the extra mile. After my interview I sent a handwritten and signed thank you card to each recruiter that interviewed me. This made a huge impact and I was later told that extra effort was noted by the recruiters. Ask as many questions as possible. Mostly everyone is willing to take time out of their day to help you and make sure you understand everything and tell you about their experience with the company.
