William is a Pre-Business student graduating in 2019. This summer, William interned at SummerHill Apartment Communities as their Acquisitions and Finance Intern in Palo Alto, CA.
If you worked on a big project, please describe it below: The biggest project I worked on was creating a market snapshot of the San Francisco Bay area for the Acquisitions team at SummerHill. The Acquisitions team wanted to know what cities/markets in the San Francisco Bay Area had the best opportunity for apartment developments. I researched cities that had accessible public transportation and excellent school districts. I found that cities with plenty of public transit are the best for developments because people need to commute to San Francisco and the Silicon Valley for work.
What did you find most challenging about your internship? I found that my commute to work was the most challenging part of my internship. SummerHill Apartment Communities has two office locations, one in Palo Alto and one in San Ramon. The first half of the week I commuted to San Ramon for work, which was an hour drive without traffic. I often found myself tired and less productive when I drove for over an hour in traffic for work
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship? If I were to offer advice to other students looking to intern in the development industry I would recommend familiarizing oneself with construction terms and lingo. It is also important to know the different acronyms that go with construction. Lastly I would recommend that students take a few excel related classes or have good knowledge with creating spreadsheets.
