Taylor Slagle is an Accounting major graduating in 2019. This winter break, Taylor had an externship with KPMG in Phoenix, AZ.
Why did you want to do this externship? During my time at the U of A, I’ve realized more and more that I want to work at a Big 4 Accounting Firm. I wanted to take advantage of the great opportunity to visit KPMG, a Big 4 accounting firm, and I’m glad that I did!
What did you do during this job shadow experience? When I first arrived, I met the professional who I would be shadowing for the afternoon. His name is Brett Mittelstaedt and he is a Senior Audit Manager in the Phoenix office. After Brett gave me an office tour, we went to lunch and talked about his experiences with the company and what he has enjoyed most. The afternoon was very informative and relaxed and I really enjoyed my time.
What did you learn from the externship? First, I learned about what a job as an audit manager would look like with a Big 4 company. The experience also gave me a decent idea of what working in the KPMG office would be like. Brett did mention that as an audit professional, very little time would actually be spent in the office itself.
Anything else you’d like to share about your job shadow experience? I would say that this experience was very informative and useful as a student studying accounting. I would highly recommend that any student who is interested in the accounting field apply for an externship with an accounting firm like KPMG. My perspective has grown since attending this event and I feel even more confident that I want to pursue a career in public accounting.
