Caroline Polatin is a pre-business student graduating in 2020. This winter break, Caroline had an externship with Pima County Finance and Risk Management Division in downtown Tucson, AZ.
Why did you want to do this externship? I already work at a county library and I was impressed with how well they treated me and it made me curious what it would be like to have a high level accounting job in the county. I also love numbers and when you are working on budgets and forecasting in the county, you feel at the center of everything that is taking place in the community.
What did you do during this job shadow experience? We were able to tour three different departments of the Pima Finance and Risk Management Division and talk with top division managers from each department.
What did you learn from the externship? I learned that there were many options, from internal auditing, to forecasting, to preparing the financial reports for the county, to budgeting. There are so many possibilities. There is plenty of room to move up and get promoted and there is a sense of care and interest in the community. This externship was a dream come true because not only will I be able to work with numbers, but I also will have a hand in helping and working with the community.
