Ornella Kaneza is an Accounting major graduating in 2019. This winter break, Ornella had an externship with Leidos in Tucson, AZ.
Why did you want to do this externship? I wanted to see a real-life application of my major. I wanted to see what a profession in Accounting really looks like, the day to day of an accountant.
I also wanted to learn about the different opportunities that there is in the private accounting sector.
What did you do during this job shadow experience? My externship program was at Leidos with the accounting team. They work in a team concept. It was a full, busy planned day for us. We went from one team to another throughout the day. With each team, we sat down with the team leader who explained to us what is the biggest part of their day, and main priority in a full day of work.
I also had the chance to meet with the Senior Accountant manager, and had the opportunity to ask questions given his background in Public Accounting and now Private Accounting sector.
What did you learn from the externship? The Accounting field offers a lot of opportunities, and I learned that it doesn’t stop to tax and audit but that there is more out there.
This externship was a great eye-opening to understanding some of the differences in Private accounting vs. Public Accounting and ranging my aspirations, long-term goals, personality traits and the work environments preferred.
Anything else you’d like to share about your job shadow experience? I would highly encourage anyone to apply for those externships opportunities to get your foot in the door. Even though the externship is just one day, you have already made an impression, made connections (don’t forget to send a thank you email) and understand the organizational culture of that particular company, which can be an advantage when competitive internships or jobs open.
