What is the position you have accepted? Inside Sales
How did you find this position? TeamworkOnline, it’s a website where all the professional sports teams post their openings.
Tell us about the process of interviewing with this company. I had a phone interview with one of the people in the Sales Department which lasted about an hour. After the interview, they invited me out to a group interview day. At the group interview day, there were about 25 other candidates there and they made it clear they were hiring a 10 person class. The interview day was very casual, the questions they asked were not normal interview questions, they were more to get to know us. After the interviews, we were given a tour of the new Little Caesar’s Arena and got to watch the basketball game that night in a suite while mingling with the rest of the Sales Department.
What previous experience have you had that you think contributed to your success securing this position? (ex. campus involvement, leadership, past internship) In the sports industry, experience matters most. I think the combination of being an Eller student, having part-time jobs in college, working unpaid internships and being in a sorority contributed to my success securing this position. For the past 2 years, I’ve been a recruiting intern for the U of A football team and the summer before my senior year I was an Event Operations Intern for the Dallas Cowboys. Other than that, I definitely think the experience I gained through being an Eller student made me stand out. Being comfortable on a phone interview, knowing what to wear and even having a Case Comp Winner padfolio made me confident throughout the day. What I think most contributed to my in-person interview success was because I had met with my Sports Management advisor beforehand and we brainstormed good answers to potential questions.
What are you most looking forward to about your position/company? I’m looking forward to contributing to the resurgence of Detroit. The Pistons just moved in August of 2017 to a brand new arena in Downtown Detroit, right next to the Detroit Lions’ Stadium and the Tiger’s Stadium, and I can’t wait to build upon that new-found excitement. One of the aspects of the Sales program that really sold me was that they had the lowest turnover rate out of all the other NBA Sales Departments. Knowing that, I feel comfortable to make mistakes and grow as an NBA Sales Associate.
Any word of advice you could give to your fellow Eller Students? Don’t be afraid to do unpaid internships, in fact, they are the key to getting a PAID job in the sports industry. I worked 2 unpaid sports internships during my 4 years in college and I truly believe that is how I stood out in such a competitive field. Not getting paid for hard work is difficult but it is a great way to figure out if you are passionate about the field you are entering.
