Courtney Ong is a MIS major and will graduate in December of 2018. She interned this summer for General Mills as the Business Management Associate Intern in Scottsdale, Arizona.
How did you get this internship? I learned about this internship through Handshake, and then I connected with the Recruiting Manager at the Eller Expo in September. At the Eller Expo, I was able to personally meet past interns and U of A Alumni that work for General Mills. I attended an information session and participated in two interviews when I received an offer.
What was your favorite part of the experience? My favorite part of the internship was visiting their headquarters in Minneapolis, MN at the end of the summer. I loved meeting the other interns from different departments and learning about the projects they worked on over the summer. I had the opportunity to showcase my projects to the VP of Sales and other senior leadership.
If you worked on a big project, please describe it below: All Sales interns had the opportunity to present at a customer meeting during their internship. My customer meeting was with Albertsons/Safeway in the Denver region. I created a presentation analyzing how Annie’s Mac and Cheese performed against its competitors and identified opportunities to grow distribution. I was able to pitch to our customer in Denver and see the direct impact I had on the company as he chose to adopt our recommendations.
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship? Be yourself at the career fair and in interviews! They’re not only evaluating if you are qualified, but if you would fit in with the company culture and other employees. General Mills highly values company culture and wants students who aren’t afraid to ask questions and voice their ideas.
How did Eller prepare you for your internship? Even though first semester of Eller was challenging, I am so grateful for the experience because it helped me succeed in this internship. I used Excel skills from MIS 304 and presentation techniques from BCOM 314. Learning to present confidently and communicate effectively was essential to this internship.
Did your internship employer provide housing or transportation assistance? My employer provided financial assistance for housing and provided resources for me to secure housing and/or find a roommate.
