Luke Jacobsen is a Management major who is expected to graduate in Spring 2019. This past summer he interned for Multiplex as the Finance/Accounting intern in Sydney, Australia.
How did you get this internship? I got the internship through the Eller College of Management who partnered with Global Academic Ventures (GAV). I interviewed with GAV and they placed me based off my interests, skills, and personality.
What was a typical day like?
A typical day was:
9am-arive to work
930 am-meet with boss and discuss tasks for the day
10-1pm-work on tasks for the day
2-5pm finish daily tasks
What was your favorite part of the experience? My favorite part of the experience was interacting with the locals and just learning how they live every day and how to work in a professional environment.
If you worked on a big project, please describe it below: I worked on the 2019 Business Plan, specifically the competitor analysis section of the business plan. Using and creating specific profit and loss statements, I was able to help Multiplex know who is the biggest competitor and who has the most opportunity in the industry.
What did you find most challenging about your internship? The most challenging part about my internship is that I didn’t have enough accounting experience as my coworkers and so some of the tasks were very challenging. Also, the accents made things harder because I always had to ask them to clarify the “slang” they used.
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship? I would tell them to brush up on their Microsoft Excel skills as well as their accounting fundamentals. They should also bring headphones to work because there is not much verbal communication with one another.
How did Eller prepare you for your internship? Eller helped me with my business communication skills (speaking in front of people) as well as working in teams to tackle projects. I wish they helped me out with more finance work and research tactics.
Did your internship employer provide housing or transportation assistance? No, my employer did not provide any housing or transportation assistance
