Internship Spotlight – Valeria Leon, Northwestern Mutual

Eller PDC Coordinator Student Stories

Valeria Leon is a Marketing and MIS double major who will graduate in May of 2019.  This summer she interned for Northwestern Mutual as the Regional Sales Team Intern in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

How did you get this internship?  I got my internship by attending the 2017 National ALPFA Convention where I networked with different employees at Northwestern Mutual. I then reconnected with them at the Fall Career Fair where I began the recruiting process.

What was a typical day like? On a typical day I would attend different meetings and networked with individuals. I was part of a big project this summer where we would had daily meetings to share our progress and what we needed to accomplish that week.

What was your favorite part of the experience? My favorite part was the countless networking opportunities you are presented with. Especially being provided free lunch, meeting someone at the cafeteria was simple. All employees were more than happy to set up a lunch or coffee meeting to share their experience and share valuable advice with me.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below: I was able to work on a project using Design Thinking to find a way to help make a program that has been around for more than 20 years more effective to improve the advisor experience.

What did you find most challenging about your internship? The first few weeks are the most challenging because you are trying to learn the company lingo and all the acronyms used by your department.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship? Don’t be afraid to network! If you are interested in a certain company or position reach out to someone that works or has worked there and ask about their experience, they are the best people to see whether or not that position is for you. Also, take advantage of opportunities such as the Eller Expo, it is never to early to start and if you have a passion for a certain position/company recruiters will remember you from those events.

How did Eller prepare you for your internship? Eller prepared me by teaching me necessary writing, presenting, and team skills through classes such as BCOM. I was able to leverage those skills through my different projects and helping me feel better prepared professionally from day one of my internship.

Did your internship employer provide housing or transportation assistance? My employer provided housing and transportation.
