Zejia Li is a Pre-Business major graduating in May 2020. Last summer, Zejia interned with iPeople Ltd in London.
If you worked on a big project during your internship, please describe what you did to help. During the internship, I was involved in a project called “Newham Social Care Recruitment Project”. This is a project that corporate with London Borough of Newham to fill out the vacancies in the institution. As a recruitment assistant, I helped searched for the candidates through company database, cv libraries, LinkedIn and total jobs. After we sorted out the list of the names, I called or sent email to the candidates to see if they were interested in the jobs. And then, I printed out the CVs and references of the candidates and make them into a folder so that it is easier for them to use in meetings.
What did you find most challenging about your internship? The most challenging part is searching for the names and approaching them. Language is one of the factors that influenced my work performance as an international intern. Also, another factor is lack of professional knowledge. Since I had never work in a recruitment agency, I do not have any ideas or understanding on how they run their business. Thus, it took me sometimes to understand the structure of the company and get used to the process of signing a contract for the candidates.
What advice do you have for other students that are also considering interning abroad? I would suggest them to do more research about local culture including how people socialize with each other in the office. Personally, I think that as long as you keep a good relationship with the coworkers, they will be more than happy to tell you something about their experiences and something you want to know about the company. This is will benefit you a lot from your internship experience.
How did Eller (or your previous coursework) prepare you for your internship? Even though I had only taken two semester courses in Eller, the knowledge and experiences I learned also helped me in my internship. For instance, BNAD 200 course help me prepared my resume and interview so that I am able to receive an offer for the internship. Also, the basic business foundation courses helped me prepare the simple tasks in internship such as data entry and record journal entries etc.
