Daniel Macdonald is a Finance major set to graduate in May 2020. This summer he interned for Charles Schwab as a Operations Corporate Actions Intern in Phoenix, Arizona.
How did you get this internship?
I applied for my internship on handshake and the Charles Schwab website. I also checked in with their recruiters during the Eller Fall career fair.
What was a typical day like?
A typical day consisted of helping process merger and acquisition information for clients. Additionally I worked with other interns on “business challenge” presentations, and shadowed different departments.
What was your favorite part of the experience?
My favorite experience during the internship was when my internship cohort was able to ask the CEO of Schwab questions on a video conference, as well as the many other upper level video conference meet and greets we were able to attend.
If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:
Rather than one large project, I worked on several smaller projects week to week as I rotated through the Corporate actions department. I also helped create a newsletter that was sent nationwide for my department.
What did you find most challenging about your internship?
Overcoming fear of public speaking to upper level managers was something that took a lot of practice. Eventually my end of summer presentation went great, but becoming confident enough in myself was a challenge I was happy to overcome.
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship?
Submit your applications early! My particular position was filled by late October. Also don’t be afraid to do a position that you think may not be your number one pick. I did an operations position, and though it wasn’t what I wanted to do long term, it lead to a full time offer in an advising role (which was exactly what I wanted to do all along).
How did Eller prepare you for your internship?
My excel skills were proficient, and my Bcom public speaking class helped me understand the important nuances of catching an audiences attention.
Did your internship employer provide housing or transportation assistance?
No, my employer did not provide any housing or transportation assistance
Anything else you would like to share about your internship experience?
I am on the far right of the photo above with my operations team. I didn’t take any individual photos of myself. Julia Valenzuela who is also in Eller is in the photo as well.
