Megan Lee is a Marketing major set to graduate in May 2020. This summer she interned as a Sales Management Intern for PepsiCo. in Alameda, California.
What was a typical day like?
At PepsiCo., they pride themselves on “never having the same day at the office.” This could not be more true of what I experienced this summer. There was no set time I had to come in or leave or set items that I have to check off of a list for a certain day.
What was your favorite part of the experience?
Throughout the summer, I got to tour the various PepsiCo. plants such as the Gatorade, Frito-Lay and Quaker manufacturing plants. It was very interesting to see how these popular items are made, packaged, and shipped. I also got to try so many chips fresh and right off the belt! (Also, for those who remember Professor Piscitello’s famous “what are the odds the bag of chips you got was a potato the same day” question, he’s totally right! It takes about 3-4 hours for a potato to arrive at our plant, washed and baked, packed, and straight to the shelves on a store!)
If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:
My project for the summer it was to decrease unsaleables (stales) and the SDV (store dollar value). I focused on 15 stores that a SDV of >2.0. I had to build relationships with store owners and managers for them to allow me to make changes and/or reallocate space that we owned in their store. By the end of my internship, I managed to decrease unsaleables by 0.54% and increase overall gross sales by 9.6%, which translated to earnings of $56,874 in just 15 stores over a period of 5 weeks.
How did Eller prepare you for your internship?
BCOM314 really helped me prepare for this internship in terms of presentation skills. At the end of my internship, over 500 interns went to HQ in Texas to present their projects in front of high level executives. The whole process was almost identical to case competition at Eller!
Did your internship employer provide housing or transportation assistance?
Housing – my employer provided financial assistance for housing and/or moving
Transportation – My employer provided transportation or financially supplemented my transportation during the internship
