Internship Spotlight – Tara Dietrich, Ulta Beauty

Eller PDC Coordinator Student Stories

Tara Dietrich is a Marketing major set to graduate in May 2020.  This summer she interned for Ulta Beauty as a Merchandise Planning & Inventory Intern in Bolingbrook, Illinois.

How did you get this internship?

The internship was posted online on their careers website.

What was a typical day like?

My typical day consisted of attending weekly department meetings, job shadowing different employees within the company, and working on my internship project. I also attended excel training classes and participated in intern-wide programming.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

My favorite part about interning at Ulta Beauty was being surrounded by their incredible company culture. Everyday I was working with people that love what they do and were excited to mentor me and help me grow in my career as well. I absolutely loved going into work everyday.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

The intention of my project was to help Ulta Beauty optimize their inventory allocation strategies for key company events to drive additional sales and traffic to stores and online. I did this by working with a variety of Excel functions and programs such as HANA reporting and SAP. I also calculated a variety of sell through percentages for their products that were sold in their major company events. After compiling this information, I was able to present my findings and recommendations to my intern class and Ulta Beauty executives.

What did you find most challenging about your internship?

The most challenging part of my internship program was getting to know the different Excel functions and programs that I had to learn for my project. I did not have a lot of experience with Excel application, but I was trained very well and had a lot of support from my managers for any questions I had.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship?

My advice for students looking for a similar internship would be to be patient and persistent. The internship application process can get stressful, but don’t let that overwhelm you. Make sure you are actively looking into different programs and apply for the internships that best align with what you are looking for.

How did Eller prepare you for your internship?

Eller helped prepare me for my internship through interview practice, collaboration within different classes, as well as enhancing my presentation skills.

Did your internship employer provide housing or transportation assistance?

Housing – my employer provided housing

Transportation – My employer provided transportation or financially supplemented my transportation during the internship
