Alex Elbogen is a Finance and Entrepreneurship double major set to graduate in May 2021. This past summer he interned for HFF in San Diego, California as an Investment Advisory Intern.
How did you get this internship?
I got this internship thanks in large part to my past experience with HFF. Last summer, I interned with HFF in Los Angeles, so that gave me the flexibility to return to an HFF office in a new market like San Diego. I applied through the company website, completed a phone interview and then did an in-person interview in San Diego. I was offered the position about a week after the in-person interview.
What was your favorite part of the experience?
My favorite part of the experience was getting to work alongside some fantastic people. The work itself was great and I surely built on my previous experience with HFF, but the people made it fun every day. I look forward to keeping in touch with my colleagues and hopefully working with them again in the future.
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship?
The best advice I could give for someone looking to earn an internship in the Commercial Real Estate industry is to network like crazy. CRE is a people business and reaching out to alumni or local professionals is vital. The best way to do it is picking up the phone or sending emails to try to meet with people over lunch or coffee. Established professionals in any field always appreciate it when students reach out to learn more about them and their work.
How did Eller prepare you for your internship?
Eller prepared me for my internship by providing me with a solid foundation in finance and encouraging me to network often. Eller also helped me become more comfortable with being uncomfortable which I think helped me to adjust to my last two internships away from home and not being afraid to showcase what I am capable of to lots of new people.
