Erica Richardson is a Finance and Business Management double major set to graduate in May 2020. This summer she interned for Goldman Sachs as a Finance Controllers Summer Analyst in Salt Lake City, Utah.
How did you get this internship?
At the beginning of my junior year, I met with the career coach Jeff Welter to discuss internship options. He had recommended that I apply to the Finance Division at Goldman Sachs, and it turned out that representatives from that division were going to be on campus the following week. I attended a Coffee Chat in the Eller PDC at that time and the rest worked itself out!
What was a typical day like?
A typical day during my internship consisted of multiple tasks at hand in which one day was never the same. The three that I focused on the most were: my day-to-day work processes for the team I was placed on, the summer analyst group project, and networking. A large emphasis was on the group project in which I worked with other interns throughout the duration of my internship. I was able to get a realistic preview of the job itself while simultaneously expanding my overall understanding of the firm through networking with other individuals.
What was your favorite part of the experience?
My favorite part of this experience was a mix between the quality of work that I was tasked with and the people I met. I feel confident that I was exposed to a realistic preview of the full-time job and the expectations that come along with it. In addition, the people had a large impact on the positive experience I had at Goldman Sachs. Everyone was so welcoming and eager to help that I was able to cultivate lasting relationships and grow professionally.
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship?
The biggest piece of advice I have for students pursuing internships is to utilize the talent and knowledge of the career coaches. In my case, Jeff Welter played a large role in helping me get to where I am today. They can help guide and mentor you throughout the application/interview process and improve your chances of landing that dream internship!
