Helen Matz is a Management Information Systems major set to graduate in May 2020. This summer she interned for Honeywell as a Business Systems Analyst in Morris Plains, New Jersey.
How did you get this internship?
What mainly lead me to getting the internship was through connecting with Honeywell at the Fall 2018 Career Fair. From there a recruiter got my resume and we had great conversation about my background and interests, all leading up to interviews at Eller and at their office in Phoenix. I also had a friend in one of the Eller clubs I am in, who interned the summer before and she told me about the internship program and the work she did during her internship.
What was your favorite part of the experience?
Working with a variety of teams within IT at Honeywell, from organizational change management to data analytics, where I lead projects that are continuing to make an impact at Honeywell. Plus living on the east coast was a great experience both personally and professionally.
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship?
If you have a particular interest or area you want to explore when going into your internship, don’t be afraid to express that during your interview and internship. Your internship experience can be truly maximized to help you grow and you will be able to make the right impact at the company as well.
How did Eller prepare you for your internship?
Having Eller case competitions where you have to work in teams and present company projects and solutions helped me immensely during my internship. This prepared me to work with my teams at Honeywell, gear where our strengths and weaknesses are in regards to the project’s needs, and be able to confidently and professionally present to leaders in the company. Also some of the MIS courses I took beforehand helped with technical background understanding when getting introduced to some of the projects I was working on.
