Internship Spotlight – Omar Cordova, Amazon

Eller PDC Coordinator Student Stories

Omar Cordova is a Business Management and Entrepreneurship double major set to graduate in May 2020.  This summer he interned for Amazon as an Area Manger in North Carolina.

How did you get this internship?

I applied through Handshake.

What was a typical day like?

On a typical day, I worked with the operations team to ensure that the day to day processes was running effectively. This included experience in area management and collaboration with the warehouses’ operations team. I was also assigned a consulting project as a part of the intern position. In which, I was responsible for improving the operations in an area known as, “smalls sortation.”

What was your favorite part of the experience?

Traveling to another state and meeting new people.

If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:

I was also assigned a consulting project as a part of the intern position. In which, I was responsible for improving the operations in an area known as, “smalls sortation”. Throughout the project, I was responsible for finding a problem, finding a solution, and finding evidence that would support my solution. This involved me talking to employees about the current processes, gathering numerical data like take times, and interpreting that data. By the end of the project, I presented my findings and improvement.

What did you find most challenging about your internship?

The most challenging thing I found about the internship was the role itself. However, after getting used to the warehouse’s daily operations I was able to overcome this challenge.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship?

My advice would be to try and gain good experience in leading a team. I would also say to consistently practice collaboration and communication skills.

How did Eller prepare you for your internship?

The college’s most relevant preparation was present in my presentation skills. Because of this, I was able to effectively and successfully communicate my project. I also feel that there were many relevant class topics and concepts that helped me throughout my in internship.
