Talia Hintermeister is a MIS, OM, and Dance major set to graduate in May 2020. This summer she interned for United Health Group as a Senior Business Analyst Intern in Minnetonka, Minnesota.
How did you get this internship?
I knew I wanted to intern in Minnesota and get experience with a healthcare company, so I reached out to a connection that worked at Optum (UHG’s health services platform) in the area. He then sent me to a link where I applied online and heard back within a week. I completed a HireVue interview and had a follow up virtual interview with two employees. I heard back the day after I had the video interview that I had received an offer from UnitedHealth Group.
What was your favorite part of the experience?
I enjoyed gaining experience with the various tools the operations team used. I especially liked learning how to use Tableau, a data visualization tool. It was fascinating to see the transformation from not knowing anything about Tableau prior to the internship to now after navigating the tool for about six weeks.
If you worked on a big project, please describe it below:
I built out a dashboard to show the operations teams’ workload using Tableau. It started with getting the requirements from the team leaders such as which metrics they wanted to see reported and how to visually display them. Then, I took the data and tried different ways to present it in charts, tables or graphs. Finally, I built out the visuals in Tableau and designed dashboards for each team within operations to tell a story about what they do.
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship?
Become comfortable putting yourself in uncomfortable situations because that can lead to the most learning and growth.
