Brianna Johnson is a Marketing major set to graduate in May 2021. This summer she interned for 3M in Sydney, Australia.
If you worked on a big project during your internship, please describe what you did to help.
I helped on a few different projects during my internship here. One of the projects focused
on market research surrounding a product 3M plans to launch in the near future. I looked into social
media statistics for Australia, influencer platforms within the target market sector and spending
habits of young teenagers and their parents. From there, I complied this information and presented
my findings to the brand manager and other 3M employees involved in the product launch.
Furthermore, I worked on some of the social media platforms for various 3M brands. I would select
images, create copy, organize and schedule posts and more.
What did you find most challenging about your internship?
Trying to jump into work with having little background knowledge was quite challenging. On
top of adjusting to the office job, I was given some tasks that I felt like I did not have enough
information on. I made sure to ask questions when I was confused to ensure I was doing the job
correctly. Attending meetings was interesting because my boss did not really explain what was going
on, so I had to pick it up as I went. As time went on, I began to understand things better and become
more efficient while working, but it was tough at the beginning not knowing anything.
What advice do you have for other students that are also considering interning abroad?
My biggest piece of advice is to ask questions when you are confused and work towards a good
relationship with your boss. As I explained in the answer above, I was struggling doing assignments
and projects because I felt I didn’t have enough background knowledge or explanation. It got easier
the more comfortable I got with asking questions. This goes hand and hand with getting comfortable
with your boss. My boss at 3M is very flexible and understands my situation as an “outsider”
essentially and uses that to her advantage. I act as fresh eyes for different product launches and
marketing project they are working on. By having a good relationship and communication with her, I
am able to explain to her what I find interesting and what I want to do versus what I am confused
How did Eller (or your previous coursework) prepare you for your internship?
Eller prepared me for this internship in a few different ways. First of all, learning Excel and
other programs in classes like MIS has been helpful since I use the program almost every day for
data, product listings, etc. Aside from classwork and technical skills, Eller has prepared me for
expectations in the business world. I felt much more confident with the interview and interacting
with my coworkers here at 3M because of Eller. BNAD 200 was one of those classes that prepared
me for this internship through the resume and cover letter prep as well as interview and case comp
