Global Internship Spotlight – Kristina Felix, Vita Boutique Fitness Pilates Studio

Eller PDC Coordinator Student Stories

Kristina Felix is a Marketing major set to graduate in 2020.  This summer she interned for Vita Boutique Fitness Pilates Studio in London, England.

If you worked on a big project during your internship, please describe what you did to help.

Right now I am working on photo content and brand awareness for the company. In the past week I have created brochures and marketing materials and delivered them to local businesses and hospitality establishments along with a short sales- like pitch in order to gain local awareness for the summer. I also continuously work on updating photo content for social media platforms to engage a younger audience.

What did you find most challenging about your internship?

I found it most challenging to adjust to the communication strategies that come with working in an International setting and getting past small cultural barriers. My boss is Italian and sometimes it can be challenging t follow instructions that she gives or social cues that are every day for her. Also adjusting to the everyday commute and life of being a Londoner. In Arizona we do not take public transportation to get to work every day and we usually have a short commute, but her the average commute is 45- 1 hour which was an adjustment. Also just learning more time management skills both at work and in commute. Usually tasks are given and no deadline is given which can make it difficult to know when I’m expected to have things completed.

What advice do you have for other students that are also considering interning abroad?

I would highly recommend any student to intern abroad because it is an amazing opportunity to develop work experience and explore another cultural work environment. I took away so many new skills and learning opportunities that I would not have gotten and grown from. It also allowed me to get out of my comfort zone and do something I’ve never done right before I graduate and am about to enter the workforce. I would also advise them to research the area of where they want to study abroad among all their choices to find the place that is right for them. For me I knew I wanted to be somewhere that spoke English and be in the middle of a big city so London was perfect for me.

How did Eller (or your previous coursework) prepare you for your internship?

Eller prepared me to be ready for anything that I am given and to get involved in any tasks that might come my way. It also prepared me to not be afraid to ask for what I want in the workplace and try to get in on projects to learn from others. Coursework in all my classes prepared me to be prepared for any deadline and task that comes my way and if it might be challenging, to approach it with confidence. Eller has prepared me to enter the workforce and be confident that I have what it takes to be successful.
