Kimya Dastoori is a Marketing major set to graduate in the Spring of 2020. This summer she interned for Macy’s Inc. as a Merchandising and Buying Intern for Handbags in New York City.
How did you get this internship?
I had shown interest in fashion before entering college, and luckily one of the world’s largest department store’s former CEOs is a UA Alum so I had heard many good things and it further peaked my interests. I found out that Macy’s recruits from both the retail school where I have a minor in fashion, as well as Eller fairly heavily. I did my research as a freshman and went to my first Eller Expo and Annual Diversity Mixer where I got in touch with my recruiter. Each year I would say hello and catch up at the Diversity Mixer and hand over a new and improved version of my resume along with stay in touch on LinkedIn. By Junior year, I was known and recognizable so that led me to receiving my offer by October.
What was your favorite part of the experience?
My favorite part of the experience (other than living in New York City) was visiting vendors and getting a sneak peek of next season’s products and styles before they hit stores and were even on the market.
What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar internship?
I would definitely take advantage of the resources that UA and Eller have to offer like seeing Career Coaches and going to the Career Fairs frequently and being prepared ahead each time. The more they see your face and get to know you, the higher your chances are down the line to get hired and stand out from a stack of applications and resumes.
How did Eller prepare you for your internship?
I am in several clubs within Eller and they focus primarily on professional development which have been very rewarding. Having to interview for those organizations and also to get into upper division helped me practice my interview skills. The amount of group work and case competitions we participate in during upper division also prepared me for the teamwork and group project we were assigned to complete during the 8 week internship.
